This Christmas I am going all local or handmade for gifts. Why? Well… why not? Winnipeg has this wonderful wealth of creative people- artists and small business owners who we should be supporting as much as we are able to. I’m in a position now where I can spend a little extra to ensure the money stays in my community and into the hands of people who work especially long and hard to be successful at something they love. Thank you small businesses! You are loved.
Here’s my local gift guide.
1. Tiny Feast Walnut/Gold Magnetic Fox
I had to throw this adorable little guy in this post. He has a magnetic back to toss paper clips or bobby pins on. Just perfect, as always. Really… just buy me anything from here and I will be ecstatic.
2. Jenna Rae Cakes Macaron Sleeve
This lady makes amazingly beautiful desserts, but this is an easy to give and transport gift for someone special.
3. Parlour Coffee Mugs
Now these babies go fast, so you better get down there and grab one soon!
4. Little Orchard Co.
For the babies and toddlers on your list. I bought a few pieces this past weekend at the Third & Bird craft sale and they are just too adorable- great prints, great packaging. I picked up the retro trailer bib/apron
Do you know someone who works downtown? Why not buy them lunch and have it delivered to them by bicycle? The Soupbee has delicious soups that will satisfy every dietary need your friend may have. It’s also a social enterprise which hires people with barriers to employment.
6. ForRay Second Hand Shoppe
Another great, local social enterprise that employs and trains marginalized and homeless youth. ForRay also has really great used items, not just any old crap. It’s also super affordable. I got a rare Pyrex casserole dish for $3. Yeah!
Happy Holidays, folks! What’s your favourite local shop/small business?
